Principal Researcher at University of Aveiro
Expertise | Fundamental and applied research in the field of algae physiology
Sónia Cruz is Principal Researcher at The University of Aveiro, Department of Biology and CESAM (Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies). She specialized in algae eco-physiology during her PhD at the University of Sheffield (UK), in close collaboration with the University of Leipzig (Germany). Since 2011, Sónia Cruz also dedicated to research on a unique algae-animal association: kleptoplasty in sea slugs. Currently, she mainly develops research on (i) algae eco-physiology, including applied photobiology in algae biomass production, frequently in collaboration with SMEs companies, and on (ii) functional kleptoplasts (“stolen” algal chloroplasts) inside animal cells.
