Sónia Cruz is Principal Researcher at The University of Aveiro, Department of Biology and CESAM (Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies). She specialized in algae eco-physiology during her PhD at the University of Sheffield (UK), in close collaboration with the University of Leipzig (Germany). Since 2011, Sónia Cruz also dedicated to research on a unique algae-animal association: kleptoplasty in sea slugs. Currently, she mainly develops research on (i) algae eco-physiology, including applied photobiology in algae biomass production, frequently in collaboration with SMEs companies, and on (ii) functional kleptoplasts (“stolen” algal chloroplasts) inside animal cells.
